Ridge Way Map
Ridgeway is considered to be the oldest British path as it has been in use for the last 4000 years. During your travels, you will pass through ancient sceneries, through isolated woodlands, and valleys. You can also visit the remnants of old forts and ancient long barrows. And you will pass through lovely villages, full of the Oxfordshire charms! A wonderful walk made for spirit’s peace.

Highlights

Avebury Stone Circle

The UNESCO World Heritage site dates back to the neolithic period, originally composed of 100 stones, but the history has destroyed several stones. The impressive stones, which measure between 12 and 18 feet and weigh at least 40 tons, were a worship site especially for praying to the gods to protect the people from diseases and natural disasters. It’s a huge site full of history.

Blewbury

A charming village, full of history and manor! The biggest manor is the Great Manor, owned by the king until the 17th century. The second one was assigned to the Church and the last one was bought by a family in1652. The village seems very warmed due to the specific houses made of red stones and the houses made with a straw roof and half-timbering.

Goring on Thames

Another lovely village! Yes, you’re in the region of charming English villages. The award-winning village for the title of “Oxfordshire village” in 2009 and title of “Calor village of the Year” in 2009 and 2010 is a jewel of Oxfordshire. Near to the River Thames, the residential area is enclosed by riverside plain. George Michael was living there in his last years.

Itinerary

Day 1

AVEBURY (Arrival)

Arrival – this area offers idyllic opportunities for walking, bird watching, and photography. Or you may choose to just relax, taking in the glorious scenery, and prepare to start your walk the next morning.

Day 2
17.5km

AVEBURY
to
OGBOURNE ST GEORGE

During your first day, you will find one of the most interesting spots in this trail: the Avebury Stone Circle, a prehistoric monument containing three stone circles. This day you will walk through wide tracks and narrower fenced paths; overall, this is considered an easy walk as you will only find one short steep downhill segment and about 93 meters of descent and ascent variation. You will finish the day walking down Smeathe’s Ridge from Barbury Castle towards Ogbourne St George, in these last kilometers you can look ahead to the ridge between Ogbourne St George and Liddington.

Day 3
17.7km

OGBOURNE ST GEORGE
to
WOOLSTONE

This trail will allow you to get an outstanding view of Smeathes Ridge. Today is quite a peaceful walk as wildflowers and birds make their appearance as well as the yellow fields of rapeseed. You will also come across some quite lovely villages such as Bishopstone and Ashbury, where you can take some time off for a lunch break. As you get closer to Woolstone, you will see the White Horse monument on the hillside of Uffington. This monument is around 800 years old and is mentioned in writings dating back to the time of Henry II.

Day 4
11km

WOOLSTONE
to
WANTAGE

The first part of today’s journey involves climbing up the White Horse Hill, where you will find Uffington Castle. Once you get to the top of the hill you will get a panoramic view of what you will be walking today. Once you get to Wantage, you might want to visit the Church of England’s parish church of Saints Peter and Paul which dates from the 13th century.

Day 5
24.5km

WANTAGE
to
GORING

Even though this is the longest walking day, most of it is level or downhill with just a few gentle and short climbs. Before arriving in Goring, you will cross the Thames River from Streatley. Goring has a few interesting places to visit such as the Basildon Park, Mapledurham House, and Watermill, where you can find the perfect resting place to enjoy the peace and tranquillity with a nice cup of tea or coffee.

Day 6
18km

GORING
to
WATLINGTON

Today you will begin walking towards the village of South Stoke before you reach the river path. During this walk, you will come across Grim’s Ditch: a prehistoric earthwork of which its original purpose is still a mystery. After arriving in Watlington, you can rest while you enjoy the fantastic views over the Oxford plain and be sure to also keep an eye out for the red kites soaring overhead.

Day 7
18km

WATLINGTON
to
SAUNDERTON

This section has the simplest navigation: straight, uncompromising, and in one direction. You will walk through Chinnor, a large lovely village southeast of the Thames River. Princes Risborough is well served with independent coffee shops, pubs, and several restaurants including Indian, Italian and traditional Fish & Chip shops. So you will be sure to find something to your taste at the end of today’s walk.

Day 8
14.7km

SAUNDERTON
to
WENDOVER

Once you leave the residential and modern part of Princes Risborough, you will find yourself surrounded by nature. After a few kilometers, the Ridgeway path will take you through the estate, and across the driveway, from this point the rest of the walk will be mostly downhill to Wendover. Wendover is well known for its historic pubs which make a perfect place to rest and eat at the end of the day.

Day 9
16km

WENDOVER
to
IVINGHOE

A good part of today´s walk includes going through Wendover and Pavis woods. After a good few kilometers of wildlife, plants, and insects (especially butterflies) the trail follows the road for a while to cross the canal and the railway. Before the Ridgeway comes to an end, there is a walkover open grassland followed by a hill to the headland. This last climb will give you a fantastic landscape view, so make sure you have your camera ready for a picture of your achievement.

Day 10

IVINGHOE

If you have some time before your flight, you might want to visit the College Lake Nature Reserve, the Ashridge Estate, or the Dunstable Downs.
