Salzkammergut - Cultural Landscapes

9 days
Starting From

The Salzkammergut is a resort area located in Austria. The lands on the shore of the Traun River comprise numerous glacial lakes and raised bogs, as well as the peaks of the Salzkammergut Mountains and the adjacent Dachstein Mountains, the Totes Gebirge and the Upper Austrian Prealps with prominent Mt. Traunstein in the east. The towering mountain slopes are characterized by bright limestone (karst) and flysch rocks. With its numerous lakes and mountains, the Salzkammergut offers many opportunities to take part in water sports, bathing, hiking, cycling, caving and golf as well as relaxing around lakes such as the Grundsee or Toplitzsee. The Katrinalm, an alpine pasture, is found near Bad Ischl. Typical Salzkammergut culinary specialties include dishes such as Kaiserschmarrm (cut-up and sugared pancake with raisins), Krapfen (similar to doughnuts) or Lebkuchen (gingerbread). The World Heritage Site includes the towns Hallstatt, Obertraun, Gosau and Bad Goisern. Hiking in the Salzkammergut doesn’t necessarily mean having to climb mountains. There is a different way! Enjoy the picturesque Salzkammergut by walking. The hiking tour takes you from the natural Lake Schwarzensee to the Lake Attersee, Austria’s largest inland lake, as far as the greatly-praised Lake Wolfgangsee. Nature and culture are in accord here and offer the perfect setting for a ramble rich in experience.
