Cape Verde Meetup Trekking Festival 2021 Map
The Meetup Trekking Festival is a hiking event which has the purpose to promote the São Nicolau’s potential for trekking development as an anchor-tourism product, providing an opportunity for unique experiences in this sports discipline, coupled with the possibility of benefiting from the culture and lifestyle of local populations. In addition to allowing practitioners to experience the island’s fantastic network of walking trails and paths, in particular, the surroundings of the Monte Gordo Natural Park, as well as being in close contact with rural communities, the program includes cultural and recreational activities and thematic workshops with national and international experts as part of the festival’s program. São Nicolau is one of the Cabo Verde islands and perhaps one of the least known. It is located in the northwestern quadrant of this archipelago and is characterized by a mixture of landscapes, which includes an extensive mountain region, intersected by green valleys – where agricultural activity holds special importance – and by volcanic plains that end on a rocky coastline. This event takes place every year in November.

Day 2

Thursday 12th November - Praia City

After a breakfast full of typical products, take some time to visit the historic area of Praia, its local market or the famous and typically African Sucupira market. In this market, you can find a little bit of everything. On the island of São Nicolau, there will be a short historical walk followed by a welcoming homemade dinner.

Day 3
14km

Friday 13th November - Walk Tarrafal (D+ 700m | D- 560m)

This walk starts at the center of Ribeira Brava village. Through walls of volcanic dikes, we follow a stream valley, an authentic oasis, and begin a climb to the first viewpoint. The climb follows a trail that is often used by cattle. Arriving at the top, it’s possible to admire the entire Ribeira Brava valley, from the sea to Monte Cintinha, and at the same time, the entire plateau of Caleijão, overlooking the sloth airport and the sea on the south side of the island. The arrival at Caleijão is made by a long road, after which a long and steep climb begins, but which provides one of the best views over the Caleijão plateau and the Preguiça field. Arriving at Tope d’Vermelin we will be welcomed by one of the best-preserved dry stone paths in São Nicolau. The path to Tarrafal is made by going around Monte de Fontainhas, always with a deep valley to the side, which after the rains forms several pools that reflect the blue sky on the rocky bottom. The village of Fontainhas, a place for raising cattle, welcomes us with its doors open to the sea. From here we start to see Tarrafal and a long descent to the sea begins.

Day 4

Saturday 14th November - Hiking, Workshops, Music, Arts and Food

On the fourth day of the festival, you will have the opportunity to participate in a number of activities which are part of the Meetup Trekking Festival; hiking led by a local guide, workshops, arts, and local food.

Day 5

Sunday 15th November - Hiking, Workshops, Music, Arts and Food

Continuing with the program of activities, you will participate in activities such as hiking led by a local guide, workshops, arts, and local food.

Day 6

Monday 16th November - Return to Praia

This will be our last day in São Nicolau! During the morning you will be free to visit the place and make the last purchases “di terra”. On the way to the airport, a small stop will be made in the fishing village of Preguiça to visit its historic fort, where Pedro Alvares Cabral stopped during his trip to Brazil in 1461. A place full of history and fishing tradition. From there we return to the airport from where we will depart for the city of Praia, in Santiago.

Day 7

Tuesday 17th November - Last day

Today we bid you farewell. Transfer to Praia International airport for your flight home.
