Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival to Gran Canaria
(Arrival

Arrival at Gran Canaria International Airport. Welcome and transfer to Agüimes. Check-in at your hotel in Aguimes. Time to discover the colourful and charming Agüimes old town.

Aguimes is a small, vibrant village on the southeast of Gran Canaria. It has a traditional architecture with a lively town centre and many exciting cultural activities throughout the year. There are also local restaurants and cafés where you can enjoy local Gran Canaria dishes.

Day 2
19km

Santa Lucía, The Palm Oasis Trail

The Caldera de Tirajana is a place of extraordinary natural beauty, where high mountains meet deep ravines. The route starts in Santa Lucía old town and follows a path that will take us to the untouched Gran Canaria, a place where nature and rural life meet in perfect harmony and create a landscape of exceptional beauty. The route takes place at the Caldera de Tirajana. Santa Lucía is a fertile land surrounded by high mountains and gifted with quiet white hamlets, small farms, an oasis of native palm trees, cane fields, vineyards and ravines. Here starts the Route of the Salt, which we will cross during our walk. Some iconic mountains (Risco Blanco, Amurga Range or the Roques) are prominent in the landscape and will be our geographical reference all over the route. Before finishing the route, we will visit an important archaeological site of Gran Canaria: La Fortaleza de Ansite. The route finishes in Santa Lucía Old Town, a quiet village with charming houses and tall palm trees. This is a beautiful hike to start your walking trip to Gran Canaria.

Day 3
19km

Triangle of Nature: Guayadeque, Caldera de los Marteles, los Roques

The Barranco de Guayadeque is a place of great interest for its natural beauty, its endemic vegetation, its importance on the pre-history of Gran Canaria and finally its charming cave houses where the local inhabitants still live nowadays. The route starts at the Montaña de las Tierras and follows a path to the centre of the Island. After a few km. we will follow an ascending track which offers impressive views over the Valley. An old stones farmers way will take us to the pine tree forest. Depending on the season of our trip, we might enjoy the presence of the blue tajinaste (an endemic plant) and also the views over Las Tirajanas Crater. We will start descending at La Caldera de Los Marteles, a volcanic crater of 550 m. diametres and 80 m. deep. On the Caldera de Los Marteles, we still can see the vestige of the farms that settled there until a few decades ago. The path around Caldera de Los Marteles is full of black volcanic ash, which resulted from the volcanic explosion thousand years ago. After crossing the Caldera de Los Marteles we will start the third part of the route. We will take the direction of the Roques de Tenteniguada. Little by little, we will start descending on our way to Tenteniguada. This part of the route becomes spectacular in Spring when the Tajinaste’s beautiful blue flowers cover the whole area.

Day 4
12km

Gran Canaria’s Sacred Rocks Route

This route starts on the highest point of Gran Canaria (Pico de Las Nieves) and follows a path that crosses one of the largest pine forests of the Island. This forest becomes especially remarkable when we acknowledge that it is the result of an outstanding ecological project undertaken by the Island’s Government in the middle of the last century (most trees were cut off after the conquest of the Island to get wood to make boats, fire, etc.) Fortunately, the Island’s Government undertook a giant reforestation project 70 years ago, with amazing results: the forest has been recovered and is 100% alive. On the way, we will have views over the Gran Canaria’s Biosphere Reserve, which covers 43% of the Island surface. Little by little you will approach a territory that was declared in 2019″World Heritage by the United Nations: Risco Caído and the Sacred Rocks”. You will go up and around Roque Nublo, one of the sacred rocks for the Canariis (the old inhabitants of Gran Canaria). Roque Nublo is an 87m. a high volcanic chimney that has become the natural symbol of Gran Canaria. From its platform, you will have beautiful views over the west side of the Island, and some days, also impressive views over Mount Teide in Tenerife, the highest mountain in Spain. From Mirador de la Fogalera, your next stop, you will have the best views over the other sacred rock: Roque Bentayga. After leaving the Roque Nublo area you will reach La Culata Hamlet, a quiet place that might be perfect to have a coffee or a drink while enjoying the sense that time has stopped. Tejeda is just 5 km. away from La Culata.

Day 5
16km

Way to Artenara - The 100 Valleys RoCaldera de Tejeda, the 100 Valleys Routeute

The route starts at Cruz de Tejeda, the geographical centre of Gran Canaria, where many walking routes start. Today’s route will take you to a path with superlative beauty which follows the border of the Caldera de Tejeda. On the way, you will enjoy the Riscos de Chapin, caves where the Canariis used to live, pine forest, great examples of other endemic species, the sea of clouds over the north face of the Island, but especially, this route offers you outstanding panoramic views over the Gran Canaria’s Sacred Rocks (Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga) and the mountain range of the west side of Gran Canaria. After a 7-kilometre walk, you will reach Artenara, the highest village in Gran Canaria. This is a really picturesque place, which might be worth a stop for a visit. We recommend a visit to the Ermita de la Virgen de la Cuevita, the Cave Museum and also the Iglesia de San Matías. Please notice that this is the only place where you will find a coffee place in case you want to stop for a coffee or a drink. After leaving Artenara you will walk in the direction of the Tamadaba forest, but you will always follow the path on the border of the Caldera de Tirajana. This part of the route gives you the most stunning views of Roque Bentayga and Roque Nublo. On the west side, it is possible to see all the canyons with a few isolated houses. Little by little you will reach Acusa Seca, where you will find a complex of caves carved on the huge rock walls, where the aborigines lived around 400 AD and the troglodyte style of living was preserved until the 20th century. In this area were discovered mummies and it is an archaeological site very well preserved. Following the path, you will reach Acusa Verde, where this amazing route finishes.

Day 6
16.5km

Gran Canaria’s Mountain to Ocean Trail

You will start today’s route in an isolated part of Gran Canaria, an area called Coruña, composed of cave houses and some hamlets. You will have the sense of solitude during the first part of the route since this is an area with little connection with the rest of the Island. On the way, you will have views over Tamadaba’s Natural Park and some water reservoirs. You will see many pine trees burnt after the fire that hit Gran Canaria in 2019. But the good thing is the “Pinus Canariensis” doesn’t completely burn, thanks to its thick bark, meaning this forest will soon be splendid again. Then, you will surround the water reservoirs following a quiet road that leads you to “El Hornillo”, a hamlet carved in a huge rock with wonderful views over Agaete’s Valley. On this point, there is a little fountain with drinkable water, and also a small coffee place (not always opened), the only one you will find on the route today. From there you will start our way to Gran Canaria’s north coast. On the way down you will witness the contrast between the black gigantic walls of the valley and the blue of the ocean, a fantastic contrast that will remind you that you are on an island.  The “Valle de Agaete” is a fertile valley with large plantations producing oranges, grapes, papayas, mangos, etc. One of these farms also produces coffee. The path will take you to San Pedro, where you will visit a winery for a local wine tasting. At the end of the visit, a taxi will take you to your hotel in Puerto de las Nieves (Agaete).

Day 7

Free day in Agaete

Free day in Agaete to discover the area or simply relax on the beach! In case you wish to go to Las Palmas, we will give you a walking plan to visit that beautiful city: the old town, the marine, Las Canteras, the Castle, etc.

Day 8

Departure

After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport, 3hrs prior to your flight.
