West Highland Way Map
Most of the first days of the West Highland Way walk start as a somewhat easy track through the Glasgow suburbs, walking along a riverside and following the path of the Blane Valley Railway. As you advance, you will find a wide range of different terrains, ranging from lowland moors, through woodland and progressing hills, to high mountainous regions. This trip will lead you to one of the most famous regions in the world, a region full of history and mysteries. Come with us hiking the Highlander’s region, meet the breathtaking sceneries. The wild nature of the Rannoch Moor or the infinity of the Loch Lomond will bring you to another world.

Highlights

Highland’s Fauna

The highland is well-known for its stunning landscapes, its high mountains. It’s also the best place for wildlife, during your trip you will probably meet golden eagles, roe deers, stag and plenty of different birds. You will also meet the Highland cattle, a typical cow with a red and fluffy furry.

Rannoch Moor

Designated as a Site of Specific Scientific Interest and Specific Area of Conservation, the Rannoch Moor is a boggy moorland of 130 km2. The moorland is famous for having served in the TV series Outlander and in the famous movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part.

Loch Lomond

A freshwater Scottish loch which crosses the Highland Boundary Fault. It’s often considered as the boundary between the Lowlands and the Highlands. Surrounded by hills the Loch Lomond is 36 km long and 153 meters deep in the Northern part. A huge center of the fauna in the Highland! And the fauna of the surrounding hills often comes to Loch Lomond.

Hogwarts Express

Wizards of the world, the letter has arrived, the Hogwarts Express is waiting for you at the end of your trip. Discover the West Highland with another point of view. The mythic train will bring you to another world. The part of the Highland that you’ve hiked will not be the same anymore.

Itinerary

Day 1

MILNGAVIE (Arrival)

Milngavie, located in the valley of the River Allander, is the start point for the West Highland Way. The Milngavie Precinct, found in the town centre, has a variety of shops and restaurants that will get you ready for your journey.

Day 2
19km

MILNGAVIE
to
DRYMEN

The walk starts in the center of Milngavie, in a spot marked with an obelisk, once you found it you should follow the course of the Allander Water River; Mugdock Park will be at your right. Today’s the easiest part, as the only high grounds are the hills of Dumgoyach and Dumgoyne.

Day 3
23km

DRYMEN
to
ROWARDENNAN

One of the most breathtaking moments of the whole trip awaits you today at the top of Conic Hill: the view of Loch Lomond and its islands. After this, you will walk downhill to Balmaha where you’ll get the chance to refuel for the second part of the day.

Day 4
22km

ROWARDENNAN
to
INVERARNAN

Today you will walk with Ben Lomond on the right side and Loch Lomond on the left. The path will be much more rustic than yesterday, however, it is fairly flat. Halfway between Rowardennan and Inverarnan, you will find Inversnaid where you can find a hotel to stop for lunch and a well-deserved breather. Inverarnan is well known as the home of the Drover’s Inn, first opened in 1705 which claims to be one of the most haunted pubs in Scotland.

Day 5
19km

INVERARNAN
to
TYNDRUM

You will see that the roads for today’s walk are better preserved than yesterday’s, which will make the walk a bit easier. You’ll get excellent mountain views with a varied section of forestry, farmland, some short steep sections, and riverside paths. As you get closer to Tyndrum, you’ll find plaques detailing the historic lead mining industry in the local area.

Day 6
14km

TYNDRUM
to
INVERORAN

Although this stage is short and easy, it has some nice highlights such as the River Orchy and the Bridge of Orchy railway station. After reaching this point, the trail becomes rougher going, ascending to 1000 ft., the bright side: the high elevation will give you a nice view of Loch Tulla.

Day 7
15.5km

INVERORAN
to
KINGS HOUSE

You will start at Victoria Bridge. Today, you will walk along the edge of the forest but also in much more open spaces such as one of Britain´s largest moors: Rannoch Moor. The middle point of this stage is Ba Bridge, not far from there you will see some cottages were you can stop for a picnic.

Day 8
14km

KINGS HOUSE
to
KINLOCHLEVEN

About 1.5 kilometers from Kings House you’ll find the challenge of the day: The Devil’s Staircase, the sharpest climb of The Way. However, taking a couple of breathers will make it way less scary than it sounds. Once in Kinlochleven, you will find plenty of options for dinner or a drink.

Day 9
24.5km

KINLOCHLEVEN
to
FORT WILLIAM

Today also starts with some climbing but then the path becomes more gentle. You will get some stunning landscape views by the time you reach Lairigmor in this first half. The final kilometers of the day will take you through forestry plantations which can be a bit rough. After this, you will find Dun Deardail which has an Iron Age Fort. Another touristic spot for this last walking day is found in Fort William: this is where the famous Harry Potter train leaves.

Day 10

FORT WILLIAM

After breakfast, we bid you farewell.
